Chatting With Champions: Meet Akhil, Second Grade Chess Champion

As parents, we often have those proud (and humbling!) moments when our kids beat us at the game we taught them how to play. That moment came early for the Gopu family when they realized their second grader was a talented chess player. Let’s chat with eight-year-old Akhil from Rancho Sienna Elementary about his love and success as a nationally ranked chess player.
When Akhil Gopu was in preschool, he was given a chess set and took to the game’s strategy quickly. His Dad recalls him asking so many questions about the game - Why did you make that move? Why not go here? When do I make this move? That level of inquisitiveness, while annoying at first for Dad, has led to a deeper understanding of the game and much success for Akhil against his own dad and others around the country.
Akhil plays chess online daily against both adults and other children. He admitted he often loses online, but it helps him work on his strategies for tournament time. He is also part of the Austin Grandmaster Chess Academy, giving him the chance to play against others his own age. He participates in rated tournaments, finishing first in Texas while in the Kindergarten division, and most recently winning the second grade division. He is now slated to attend the national tournament in Spokane, Wash. this month. His teacher Stephanie Blay shared, “I’m especially excited for his upcoming chess tournament at nationals—what an incredible opportunity. I know he will represent Liberty Hill ISD and Rancho Sienna Elementary well at nationals. I can’t wait to see how well he does; I know he’ll bring the same focus and determination he shows in the classroom. It’s truly a blessing to be his teacher.”
He will enter the tournament ranked #17 in the nation with the goal to be in the top ten. After playing only a few years, he has amassed quite the collection of trophies his family proudly displays in their home. He has 14 trophies in total from various tournaments and wins with his academy.
Akhil explained his opening move when on White is a Scotch Gambit, an aggressive chess opening for White to gain rapid development and launch an attack, often targeting the vulnerable f7 pawn. It is a dynamic opening suitable for attacking players, but it can be risky if Black knows how to defend properly. If Akhil starts on Black, he likes to open with a Sicilian Defense. This strategy is a complex and dynamic opening that aims to control the center and break symmetry, leading to sharp and often imbalanced positions.
The dedication Akhil puts into chess is also displayed in school. Blay said, “I’m so proud of Akhil, for his dedication to learning and the hard work he puts in each day. His effort truly makes a difference, and it’s inspiring to see his growth. Akhil is a great example of a champion in academics, character, and community.”
In addition to playing chess, Akhil enjoys playing other strategy games like Monopoly and Ticket to Ride with his family. He also likes being outside and playing forward in soccer where he can attack and score!
Liberty Hill is proud of you, Akhil and can’t wait to hear how you do at nationals!
